Does ChatGPT recommend your dental practice? How to find out

Patients are asking AI assistants for a dentist the way they used to ask friends — or type into Google Maps.

"Best dentist for nervous patients near me." "Who does same-day crowns in [city]?" "Family dentist that takes [insurance]."

If ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, or a similar tool answers with a short list of names, your practice is either on that list or it is not. That can change which offices get the next new-patient call.

This article shows you how to find out whether ChatGPT names you today, what to write down, and which fixes are actually in your control. It does not promise that any assistant will recommend you. Nobody can promise that.

Engine honesty up front: FirstInChat's free audit today is a website readiness check plus a Google Gemini snapshot from built-in knowledge only (ungrounded: no live search; may be out of date; not AI Overviews or AI Mode). It does not currently test ChatGPT, Perplexity, or live Google AI answers. Grounded Gemini + Google Search checks come later (no date).

Why patients ask AI for a dentist

People want a short answer, not ten blue links. AI chat tools feel like asking a knowledgeable friend: type a question in plain language, get a few names, maybe a reason.

Typical questions sound like:

When the answer is a named list, the practices on it get attention. The ones missing from it never hear the phone ring from that search.

You do not need to panic. You do need a clear picture of whether you show up — and a plan for the basics you control.

How AI assistants decide which practices to name (plain English)

No public playbook guarantees a spot. In plain English, assistants that answer local questions tend to lean on information that already exists on the open web and in major listings:

Two assistants can still disagree. ChatGPT might name three offices; Perplexity might cite different sources; Google AI Overviews might show a summary next to Maps results. Models update. Wording of the question changes the answer. Location signals differ.

So treat any single answer as a snapshot, not a ranking certificate.

FirstInChat does not claim to know each assistant's private ranking formula — and we do not claim product coverage of ChatGPT or Perplexity.

How to check your own practice in 10 minutes

You can run a quick manual check yourself. For a fuller worksheet and why answers vary by day, see How to check whether AI mentions your dental practice.

Before you start

5 questions to copy and paste

Replace the brackets with your real city and services:

  1. Who are good dentists in [city]?
  2. Best family dentist in [city] that takes new patients
  3. Dentist in [city] for [your specialty, e.g. implants / nervous patients / kids]
  4. Emergency dentist near [neighborhood or city]
  5. Does anyone recommend [Your Exact Practice Name] in [city]?

Ask the same five in ChatGPT if that is the tool you care about today. Optionally repeat one or two in another assistant patients use — answers may differ. That difference is normal.

What to write down

For each question, note:

Question

Named? (Y/N)

Position if named

Who else was named

Date / tool

Save the table. You will want it when you re-check next month.

Why one check is not proof

Answers change with wording, day, and model updates. Being named once does not mean you will stay named. Being missing once does not mean you are invisible forever.

Use the check to learn patterns (always missing on emergency queries; named only when you force the practice name) — not to declare victory or defeat.

What to do if you are not named

Focus on three fixes that are in your control. None of them buy a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT. All of them make accurate information easier for people — and for systems that summarize the open web — to find.

1. Website data that matches the real world

Same practice name, address, phone, and hours on your homepage, contact page, and Google profile. Say what you do and where in the headline ("Family dentist in [city]"), not only in a logo image.

Add structured data so machines can label those facts. Guide: Dentist schema markup: a copy-and-paste guide.

2. FAQ / Patient Questions content

Put the questions patients actually ask — insurance, first visit, emergencies, kids, implants — on a clear page with short, factual first-sentence answers.

Template thinking: The Patient Questions page for dentists.

Check your state dental board's advertising rules before you publish prices or outcome claims. We are not giving legal advice. Never publish patient chart details.

3. Reviews with useful detail

Encourage honest Google reviews after good visits. Specific, recent reviews that mention real services help humans choose — and may inform systems that summarize public web content. Nobody can promise AI naming from reviews alone.

What nobody can promise you

What you can own: accurate facts, clear pages, ethical reviews, and a habit of checking.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT recommend dentists near me? Sometimes it names local practices when you ask with a city or neighborhood. Results vary by question, day, and model. Treat any answer as a snapshot.

How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my dental practice? Ask five plain questions with your city and services in a fresh chat, write down whether you were named, and repeat later. Full method: How to check whether AI mentions your dental practice.

Why does ChatGPT name my competitor and not me? Often their public information is clearer or more consistent — website details, listings, reviews, or quotable Q&A. It is not proof of a secret deal. Fix what you control first.

Does the FirstInChat free audit test ChatGPT today? No. The audit is a website readiness check plus a Gemini built-in-knowledge snapshot (ungrounded). It does not test ChatGPT or Perplexity. Grounded AI answer checks come later. It does not promise rankings or results.

Is it okay to put patient information into ChatGPT to "check" something? No. Never paste patient names, charts, or other private details into public chat tools or into our forms.
