How to Make Your Dental Practice Easier for AI to Understand: 6 Steps You Control

Patients have started asking AI assistants questions like "Who's a good dentist near me?" and getting back a short list of names. Naturally, owners ask: how do I get on that list?

Here is the honest answer. Nobody controls what an AI assistant says, including ChatGPT, Google's AI answers and every other tool. Anyone who promises you a guaranteed spot is guessing or selling.

What you do control is how easy it is for an AI to find, understand and trust the information about your practice. That's what these six steps are about. They are also good for ordinary Google search and for patients reading your website, so the effort doesn't go to waste if AI turns out to matter less than expected.

Before you start: check where you stand

It's easier to improve when you know your starting point. Ask a few questions the way a patient would, such as "best family dentist in [your city]" and "emergency dentist open Saturday in [your city]", and write down whether you're named and who is named instead. Our guide How to check whether AI mentions your dental practice walks you through it in ten minutes.

Step 1: Say clearly who you are, what you do and where

Your home page headline (the H1) is one of the first things any machine or person reads. Make it specific.

Name your city or neighborhood, your main services and who you serve. Keep the page title consistent with it. Do this first. It costs nothing and takes about twenty minutes.

Step 2: Give each main treatment its own page

If all your treatments sit on one "Services" page, an AI (and a patient) has to guess what you do well. Give your top treatments, such as implants, clear aligners, emergency care or children's dentistry, their own pages. Each page should explain, in plain language:

Write for patients, not for search engines. Skip clinical claims you can't back up, and avoid promises about outcomes. Check your state dental board's advertising rules.

Step 3: Publish a "questions patients ask" page

AI assistants answer questions, so it helps to have your site answer questions too. Collect the real questions your front desk hears:

Write a short, direct answer under each. Use the patients' own words as the question. Then ask your web person to add FAQ markup, a standard way to label questions and answers so machines can read them. This one page often does more than anything else on this list.

Step 4: Keep your details identical everywhere

Your name, address, phone number, opening hours and services should match on your website, your Google Business Profile and every directory that lists you. When sources disagree, assistants (and patients) can get confused, and may leave you out or show the wrong hours. Fix mismatches at the source, one listing at a time.

Step 5: Earn reviews that describe the care

Reviews matter to patients and give AI tools something to learn from. Two things help:

When you reply to a review, keep it general and kind. Never reveal anything about a patient's care, even if they mention it themselves.

Make your reviews easy to find from your website, too.

Step 6: Make your site readable to machines

These are quick wins for your web person:

  1. Structured data (schema.org). A block of labels on your site that spells out your practice name, address, phone, hours and services.
  2. Don't block AI crawlers in robots.txt unless you've decided to. Many sites do it by accident.
  3. A sitemap, so every page is easy to find.
  4. HTTPS on every page.
  5. An llms.txt file. A short text file that describes your site for AI tools. Be realistic: nobody can promise that AI tools use it today. It's cheap, so it's reasonable to add, but don't count on it.

If this list means nothing to you, forward it as-is. Your web person will know what to do.

Frequently asked questions

Can I guarantee my dental practice will be recommended by ChatGPT or any other AI? No. No one controls what an AI assistant says, and answers change. You can make it easier for AI to find accurate information about you, and that's what the steps above do.

How long does it take to see a difference? It can take weeks, and results vary. Some changes, like a clearer headline, are quick to make. How quickly any AI reflects them isn't something anyone can promise.

Is this different from regular SEO? They overlap: clear pages, accurate listings and good reviews help both. AI answers also reward direct answers to patient questions and well-labelled data, so the FAQ page and structured data matter more here.

Do I need to hire an agency? Not necessarily. A competent web person can do most of this. If you want it handled for you, that's what our plans are for.

Will this expose patient information? No. Everything described uses public information about your practice. Don't put patient details into any AI tool or into review replies.

What does the free FirstInChat audit do? It checks reviews shown on your site and whether your headline says what you do and where, plus your site's basics. It also shows a Google Gemini snapshot from built-in knowledge only (no live web search). Grounded checks with Google Search are planned for later, with no date yet. You get a readiness score and your top three fixes. It doesn't promise rankings or results.
